If you’re thinking about installing a heat pump, there’s great news—planning rules have just been relaxed across England, making it far easier to install a system without the need for planning permission. At GreenGenUK, we specialise in heat pumps in Cornwall and Devon, and these changes are set to benefit many of our customers, especially those with limited outdoor space.
The government has updated permitted development rules to support the UK’s transition to low-carbon heating. Here are the key updates:
Previously, air source heat pumps (ASHPs) needed to be installed at least 1 metre from the property boundary. This has now been scrapped, meaning more homes across Cornwall and Devon are now eligible.
The maximum unit size for permitted installs has increased from 0.6m³ to 1.5m³, allowing for larger, more efficient systems that suit bigger homes.
Detached homes can now install up to two heat pumps under permitted development—ideal for properties with higher heating demands.
The new rules also apply to air-to-air systems that offer both heating and cooling—great for year-round comfort in Devon and Cornwall.
Installations must still meet MCS 020 noise standards to ensure systems are quiet and neighbour-friendly.
Whether you live in a Cornish cottage or a new build in Devon, you’re now more likely to install a heat pump without needing planning permission. That means faster, easier installations and less red tape.
At GreenGenUK, we’ve already helped hundreds of customers make the switch with our trusted Mitsubishi, Vaillant, and Samsung heat pumps. With local teams across Cornwall and Devon, we’re ideally placed to deliver quality, low-carbon heating solutions.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides a grant of up to £7,500 towards your installation, making the switch even more affordable.
